Welcome to the Yucca Desert! You'll be treated with a new traveling theme is this scorched land. There's a lot to do here, even if anyone tells you otherwise.
There's one drawback: the foes! Some can be super-tough here and just as merciless as the sun. Ultra Barbots sporting PK Beam r, Gabilans with their continuous strikes and dehydration, Energy Robots exploding when you defeat them; all can make for a tough trip battle-wise. Don't skimp on the healing here, as failure to do so will ultimately result in death!
However, if you happen to have the Super Spray, you can easily fell all the Tarantulas and Scorpions here. Once used, it kills ALL insect enemies immediately, so if you haven't picked it up from Duncan's Factory, it's highly advised to make a little trip back (unless you can defeat them just fine).
While the Rattlesnakes may appear to be mostly harmless, wasting turns by approaching, beware! They, like Sky Yddets and Shroudleys, can give Last Blows, killing themselves, but giving you HIGH amounts of damage. The usual rule about snakes applies here: Tread lightly!

Search out the nearest oasis to find an old pilot from a war that occurred in Yucca Desert years ago. He's giving flying tours to anyone who will pay and offering a tank ride for 10 stubs of the tickets you get from taking the air trips. The flights are a great way to see the desert free of enemy battles.
If you take the cheapest flight, the war veteran will circle a few times around an odd cactus -- remember to return here later, as that plant is important!
You'll also see on the flight an old foundation of a building. There's an odd cave leading into the ground as well. You'll have to return here on foot for exploration, it seems.
Take different flight plans if you have the cash to see more of the EarthBound Zero world. Flight 1 will show you only Yucca Desert; flight 2 will go through Podunk, your house, and Duncan's Factory; flight 3 goes overhead Youngtown and Ellay.
Return to the cactus you saw on flight plan 1. If you Check it, you'll get an odd feeling. Use Telepathy on the cactus to learn the fifth melody.
Return to the veteran. Take enough flights to net 10 tickets (you may have to toss some beforehand to clear inventory space so he'll take you up to the sky) and show him your collection.
Keeping his word, he'll let you take the tank. This piece of machinery is superb! You won't get any random battles as you cruise through the vast desert. Head towards the foundation you saw on a flight plan.
At a certain place, you'll find yourself in a battle. A huge robot will block your path! No worries, though, as all of his attacks will be reflected by the tank as you barrage him with the cannon for an easy win.
The bad news is that as the robot is destroyed, he scraps the tank as well. In any case, the way forward is now clear, so head on down through the passage before you.
If, by chance, you return to the veteran, he'll be gone. Oh well, you didn't want to apologize anyway! Wonder where he went, though....
For the adventurous explorer, you may come across a secret surprise in the desert: a single mine was left in the desert. If you find it and step on it, you'll get a message from Shigesato Itoi, the game's producer! Oops, maybe that shouldn't have been mentioned....
